  • Bier - Beer. Swiss beer is usually a light lager, but some are dark (dunkel). Panaché is a refreshing mixture of beer and lemon soda.
  • Kaffee - Coffee. Kaffee natur is black. Kaffee créme is with cream. A Schale or Milchkaffee is coffee with hot milk.
  • Milche - Milk. Vollmilch is whole milk. Milkch Drink is low-fat milk. Magermilch is non-fat skim milk. PAST is pasteurized milk.
  • Rivella - A Swiss soft drink, made out of whey, the by-product of cheese making.
  • Schnaps - Brandy or distilled wine. Potent (often 100 proof), clear and slightly flavorful. Äpfelli is from apples, Kirsch is from cherries.
  • Tee - Tea. Tee Citron is tea with lemon. Tee Natur is plain. Ice Tea (pronounced "EES tay") is popular, and almost always served sweetened.
  • Wasser - Water. When the Swiss ask for water in a restaurant, they are asking for mineral water. Water is not served automatically. Ask for normales Wasser or Brunnenwasser if you want normal water.
  • Mineral wasser is carbonated, bottled water. A trick many people use is to always carry around aspirin. When you want water, simply show the aspirin to your waiter, and they will get the idea.
  • Wein - Wine. Some think the best are white (try Aigle, Èpesses, Erlacher, Fendant, or Feechy), while other prefer red (Dole, Merlot, Hallauer, or Blauburgunder).
